You should definitely check out Byron Bay, if you can get time to go a bit further North from Sydney along the East Coast. Well worth it. Though not a fashion mecca, there is a disportionate number of beautiful people, and the area is amazing.
Apart from that, Melbourne is definitely a must see. Waaaayyyy better than Sydney.
Fortitude Valley, Brisbane
I can't stress enough how badly you need to go to Melbourne. It is the most forward moving, creative city in Australia, and everyone is ridiculously nice and good-looking and the art, party, and fashion scene there is unlike anywhere else. Melbourne has room for personal uniqueness, and I find Sydney very fashionable but very mainstream. That said though, I'm sure I can be proven wrong, its been a couple years since I visited Sydders. Anyway, looking forward to seeing your new material!

I would love to say perth (as i live there and it would be cool to see people who i may have seen) but it's not a very fashionable place ): i am going to say melbourne as it truly is a unique, stylish and cultured place and I know you would get some amazing pics!!!

In Sydney, highly recommend you visit the Ivy (on George St, near Wynyard station). You will see a lot of beautiful people wearing beautiful clothes, especially Friday and Saturday night!

Melbourne for sure, Sydney is not great at all, Brisbane is a definate NO. Basically, Melbourne is the best place to see fashion, art, music. Clubs are the great here too, check out Third Class, or Eurotrash. Flinders Lane is a must see, and StKilda, as is Brunswick Street.
MELBOURNE is totally original, much better than Sydney.

well... i am only reinforcing what these other wise cats are telling you: melbourne must top your list of priorities!
here, you will find a kaleidoscope of culture... a city that celebrates and makes the most of its multiculturalism and diversity. when it comes to fashion, melbourne is far less commercial than the other australian cities - it is not a showy city, rather it is content in being its unique self. quite enchanting. while in the CBD, the laneways are your key to the true heart and soul of the city.
during your stay, having a late and lazy brunch (or three) is an absolute must! try 'gluttony, it's a sin' on smith street, fitzroy; 'the green refectory' on sydney road, brunswick (look for the red 'illy' coffee sign); or 'ici', just off brunswick street, fitzroy.

it's not the most fashion forward place in the world (denim cut-offs, loose white top, gladiator sandals on most girls. and pseudo indie across both genders), but it'll be summer, so there'll be plenty of great legs at least. do bring sunscreen and a nice sunhat.

You will love Sydney. A beautiful city. For some Northern Beaches style - head up to Manly. (make sure to go to the beach and walk to Shelly Beach, loveliest beach. If its warm enough - snorkel at Shelly Beach). Leichhardt is great for Italian-ville. As well as Balmain for some funky style. Inner city is fun (you'll no doubt hit the Rocks) - The Lord Nelson has pie nights on Monday. $5 pie (the best!) and get a beer there. Very wow! Sydney really is a beautiful city.
Melbourne and Torquay for the beach.
I've know basically nothing about Austrailia so unfortunately I can't offer any advice, but I didn't want to wish you luck there. Have a safe trip!

You should definitely make the journey up to Brisbane! I can't believe people are actively discouraging you. It's a beautiful, friendly city and while not as fashion savvy as Sydney or Melbourne, the city has a laid back style of its' own that is worth checking out - West End and Fortitude Valley and Paddington would all be good spots to check out. Please come pay us a visit! I will buy you a drink if you let me know that you're coming!

As a New Yorker living in Sydney, there is only two places in Australia for you to find fashion forward people - Melbourne (I can't stress enough that Melbourne is the place to see Fashion) and Sydney. Everywhere else in Australia is horrible and I mean HORRIBLE for Fashion.
Aw, no one said Adelaide? I'm not surprised, there are admittedly only a handful of fashionistas here. I would agree with Sydney & Melbourne...If so, when would you be in Melbourne? :)
PS. If you love wine, South Australia/Adelaide is the place to visit! ;) The wine regions are beautiful too (Adelaide Hills, McLaren Vale, Clare, Barossa Valley, etc.)

I'd suggest doing what bands do when they tour Australia, go to Sydney and Melbourne, and then Brisbane if there's time and money to spare.
As a Brisbane resident though i've got to say it doesn't deserve the hard time some people have been giving it. I was involved in running a indie club night until recently and all our american acts commented on how much more fashionable the Brisbane crowd was than any others they'd seen. They're hard to find, but there is a small group who really push fashion hard.

you should definitely come to Adelaide! It's the most beautiful an relaxed capital city in Australia.
I found the fashion in Melbourne to be a little contrived - fashion forward but obviously so. The fashion in Sydney is subtler.
Newtown is great for a range of people, from hippies and goths to extremely well dressed, fashion forward beautiful people. Kings Cross is where the trendy night time/club scene is at. Paddington is the upper-class trendy area, where people have a bit more money to spend on designer clothes (many Australian designers have shops there).
In Mebourne Brunswick street in Fitzroy and Chapel st in Prahran are musts.
You should check out some of the local vintage clothes markets in Sydney, lotsa cute peeps and streety looks.
Surry Hills markets is on the first Saturday of the month and the Fringe Bar markets in Paddington should def be on your list.

there is fierce competition betwen Sydney and Melbourne as to which city is the "fashion capital."
The facts are this:
-- Sydney is where all the fashion magazines are concentrated
-- Sydney is where the top local models are based
-- Sydney is where Australian Fashion Week is held. The Melbourne version is very consumer-driven.
-- A lot of top Australian desingers are based in either or Melbourne.
-- Sydney is far more beach / summer oriented, given the surf beach is 20 minutes from the city.
-- Melbourne likes it's layering and wintery looks.
As someone who spends time in both cities, i say visit both. In Sydney check out Surry Hills, Bondi on the weekend, and Newtown.
In Melbourne go to the Fitzroy area, Camberwell Markets on the weekend, and Prahran.
Melburnians (of which I am one, originally) have a very highly inflated opinion of their own fashionability. They are highly defensive of this title, and will convince you theirs is the fashion capital of Australia. The facts say otherwsie, but whatever - please visit both, you will not be disappointed!

Melbourne - Go to Centre Place (which is between Flinders lane and Collins Street), Hosier Lane (off Flinders street), and Little Collins street in the city. Also go to Gertrude Street in Fitzroy, and Fitzroy Street in St Kilda.
Don't get bogged down in Melbourne v. Sydney they are both fabulous in different ways. Have a ball.

True, as far as Australian cities go, Melbourne is probably the best, although those of us who live here tend to be a bit full of ourselves and over-estimate how special we are. ("'European' laneways! Just like in Europe!")
The inner north (Gertrude St in Fitzroy; Smith Street Collingwood; Brunswick and Brunswick East) is worth wandering around; I'm a bit sketchy on anything south of the Yarra river; and the CBD would be more appealing if the whole 'laneway bar' thing hadn't become a government-sponsored marketing cliche (a government that promotes 'street art' but locks people up for 'graffiti'!). Although Melbourne is more reserved about showing off its charms, it is arguably a more laid-back and friendlier place on the whole than road-raging Sydney.
Sydney has its good points - i.e. beaches, more sunshine, the Glebe-Newtown axis.
It is really a NY-LA kind of rivalry, I think.

definitely Melbourne over Sydney. Sydney fashion is generally more about looking expensive so it's all labels and boring shit. Melbourne is the art, music and cultural hub of Australia so the style is much more interesting and original. There are a lot of "financially-challenged" creatives in Melbourne who come up with interesting ways to express their individual styles without relying on a brand name.

as someone who lived in sydney up until this year, i would have to say you should visit melbourne. the side alleys in the cbd have crazy fashion and awesome coffee shops. id love to see what you would uncover here

I'm from Sydney but I lived in Melbourne at the beginning of this year and fashion wise, I fit in in Melbourne a lot better. The fashion you'll find in Sydney is more pretentious and trying to be original, however in Melbourne, people have their style. A lot of Sydney people shop vintage, but vintage that isn't so nice, more old lady style. Melbourne people know who they are and what to wear. People in Melbourne know that spending more money on one fabulous item that will last them forever is a lot better than spending that amount of money on several cheap things that will not go through time and will only wear for the one season, or even a few weeks.
One person said, "I find Sydney very fashionable but very mainstream" and that is very true. When I arrived back in Sydney after 6 months of Melbourne fashion, I went out wearing black, shiny leggings and had a few people stare and comment and some even "quietly" said to their friends how disgusting they were. I felt a little hurt at first, but then ignored them and met up with some Melbourne people who took one look at me and told me I looked fabulous. However, 4 months later, everyone is wearing them. The majority of Sydney does not have the confidence to show individualism. Melbourne fashion is more statement. Melbourne boys (straight or gay) will wear leggings, Sydney boys will take one look at them and call them gay.
I do love Sydney and would suggest to go to places like Paddington, Surrey Hills and Newtown where you will see individualism and bravery expressed. Someone also said to visit the Ivy. As the other person said about the mainstream fashion, I think the Ivy is very mainstream where the girls are all in pretty dresses and gladiator heels.
But, whatever. I hope to see you in Sydney or Melbourne if I'm visiting when you're around. :)

I really wouldn't reccomended Byron Bay, as many people already seem to have done... it's filthy with a ridiculous divison between drugged up hippies and the rich beach villa sorts.
Haha someone said NIMBIN! Definately try and make your way to Brisbane, but as a lot of people said I'd go to the Valley, West End and Paddington. If you do make it to West End go to the cute cupcake shop called the "Cupcake Parlour" in Vulture street - even though that has nothing to do with hunting face I'm sure you'll be hungry sometime!

Well, I've never been to Sydney so I can't comment there, but having just come back from a year living in Paris, I can definitely say that Melbourne is a cool city.
My top tip for Melb is to check out the 'little' streets. The east-west streets alternate between 'big' and 'little' streets (it'll make sense when you look at a map). Little Collins instead of Collins, Flinders Lane instead of Flinders St etc. The Block Arcade is really cute too...
As everyone's said Fitzroy's awesome - take the 96 tram from the city for a real Melbourne experience. Brunswick St, Smith St Nicholson St - that whole area is fun. St Kilda is great too - especially the Sunday Esplanade markets. But don't plan to swim there - it's gross.
But I assume you're not only in Australia to look at the people? Have the set lunch at Yu'u in the CBD (google it first so you know *exactly* where it is and book), go to the Moroccan Soup Bar, the Veggie Bar while you're in Fitzroy. I love those places and I'm not even a vegetarian!
I'm actually from Adelaide, and while I wouldn't recommend coming for the fashion, it is a really pretty, sweet, relaxed city to spend a couple of days. Especially if you're into wine - a day spent in one of the regions is lovely. Go to McLaren vale and start with a lunch at Coriole...
Anyway, I could go on for ages, but I'll stop there.

Melbourne is ok, but Sydney is so much nicer!
Melbourne people are almost obsessive about being the most fashion-forward. Sydney-siders are much more understated about it and just go about fashion their own way without using a megaphone to let everyone know how fashionable they are.
Definitely visit Oxford Arts Factory in Sydney and I would recommend scouting around the major universities (Sydney Uni and UTS) for some quirky fresh young things.

Forget the sydney v. melb debate lovely lad, instead cruise up to Fortitude Valley, West End and Paddington in Brisbane. Us chilled out kids would love to show you around.
WOOOHOOOOO!!! some of the other good spots in sydney CBD are pitt street and george street.. not the trendiest streets but is where most uni students attending the two huge universities down the road are
waterloo, redfern, darlington, balmain are also quite creative areas.. but because an area is promoted by the local council as 'creative' you will still find outfits worth face hunted outside the creative circle..
shopping complexes worth style hunting at: warringah mall, bondi westfields, david jones CBD, paddys market, mosman shopping centre

Canberra is really boring but it's the capital of australia and the people there are pretty amazing!
Melbourne is a definite, it's way better than Sydney!
Fremantle, in Western Australia, is a very underrated place. I'd definately check it out! Lots of vintage stores and fashionable people. Be prepared for hot weather!

check out danks street in waterloo which is an inner sydney suburb. it's an art gallery precinct, lots of truly stylish people rather than uber trendy scenesters.

Sydney: Oxford St. & Paddington, Crown St. Surry Hills, Gould St. Bondi Beach... where all the good boutiques, indie clubs and good looking people are often found.
Go to Melbourne, specifically Fitzroy. It's awesome. Plus the CBD is full of great laneways with shops and bars.
Sydney is great as well. Go to Oxford Street in Paddington. It has tons of great shops and a market on Saturday's thats pretty cool. Also Glebe markets on the weekends have some pretty great stuff. Surry Hills and Darlinghurst are good places to check out the cafe scene.
I moved to Fitzroy in Melbourne (from WA) and think it is one of the most amazing places in Australia. Specifically in Fitzroy you NEED to visit Gertrude Street and Brunswick Street. Degraves Lane in the city centre is fabulous too.

I think you should really check out Sydney Rd, Brunswick. It is one of Melbournes last fringe areas. There are many hidden away fashion boutiques that have been around for years where you can find their fashion savvy customers walking the streets. There is also recycle warehouse 'Savers' where you can find many of the RMIT fashion students shopping, as the school is nearby. The outfits in this area will be the most inspiring and creative in Melbourne.

Melbourne is the place for street fashion. Melbourne is the Arts and Culture capital of Australia. Beats Sydney by far!
You MUST come and check out Brunswick st, Fitzroy, in Melbourne...quirky cafes & boutiques, awesome people too .... everyday is an adventure in melbourne, there's sooo many places to see, people to admire, it has an awesome vibe during the day & night....there won't be a moment of boredom, i guarantee it! :)

i know you've heard it already but you have to check out these places in ole melbourne-towne:
1. camberwell market. don't miss it. always so much going on and so many well-dressed people! especially around november as the weather warms up so there will be lots and lots of people there.
2. flinders lane (the bit in between elizabeth and swanston streets) and all the lanes connected to it, especially centre place.
3. the vegie bar on brunswick st (and other places on brunswick st, but the vegie bar is THE BEST. it's like an institution in melbourne). also gertrude st just nearby has about 5 amazing vintage stores in a row, among other things.
4. lygon st and sydney rd in brunswick. there are a zillion little cafes around, and sydney rd has some interesting shops (and of course SAVERS).
5. chapel st is good as well, although parts of it are very 'trendy trendy' which can be annoying.
If you're in Surry Hills, Sydney, The Cricketers Arms generally full of Sydney's more stylish crowd, Health Club on a Thursday night at the Flinders Bar, Flinders Street generally has a fair few stylish types dancing around to cheesy music / smoking outside. The Ivy is a shit hole full of suits yuck, Generally though I think Melbourne's gonna give you a bit more to look at! Either way you have mega fun here, enjoy...

If you are in Melbourne around the beginning of November, the Spring Racing Carnival will be quite amazing.
There of course, will be all the usual 'fashionable' suspects, but I am sure you will find some truly stylish people there as well.
And also, hang out near the universities where you can.

GO AND CHECK OUT THE VCA. that's the art school, everyone who goes there has amazing beautiful outrageous fashion. You have to go the visual arts department, which is tucked away behind the main building. Someone will show you if you ask.
I just moved away from Melbourne, but it is by far the most wonderful australian city.
Come to Canberra! You will find some delicious babes to capture in your lens!

Being a Melbournian, i recommend Melbourne. This city is full of hidden gems and gorgeous cosy lane ways. Fashion aside, i recommend the Gold Coast in Queensland or Tasmania for sight seeing.
When in Melbourne in the Springtime, you MUST go to the Races!! Everyone, regardless of their class or connections, dresses to the tens - hats, gloves, everything! There are a lot of 'safe' hotties and fashionistas, but plenty of edgier vintage-gothic looking people too.
Get a press pass or something so you can wander around all the different areas - you'll definitely need a few extra rolls to capture all the amazing looks!
Oh and one week after you arrive is the Melbourne Cup - the centrepeice of the festival - with Ladies' Day 2 days later. So perhaps you should go to Melbourne first?
keep your expectations low - that way, you might just be pleasantly surprised!
i would love if you came to perth but it's about one in a million that you'll find a well dressed lad/ladette on the streets here in all honesty :(
